Criminal convictions for Murder, and most forms of Sexual Assault, Aggravated Assault and Robbery can bar nursing licensing in Texas. Other disqualifications include criminal convictions and Deferred Adjudication probation for felonies, assaultive offenses, and crimes of moral turpitude including Fraud and Theft.

In 2003, The Institute of Medicine (IOM), now known as the National Academy of Medicine, made recommendations that nursing work hours be limited to no more than 12.5 hours in a 24-hour period, 60 hours in a 7-day period, or 3 consecutive days of 12-hour shifts.
