The fig sign is a mildly obscene gesture that uses a thumb wedged in between two fingers. The gesture is most commonly used to ward off the evil eye, insult someone, or deny a request. It has been used at least since the Roman Age in Southern Europe and parts of the Mediterranean region, including in Turkish culture.

In this gesture, the thumb sometimes touches the middle finger. The insult of this is equivalent to the finger. In Iranian culture, a similar gesture is used to represent "Dirt on your head", a verbal insult that is often used, suggesting the receiver is dirty, or unwashed.

The gesture was popularized in the 2010s after its use in The Hunger Games as a symbol of revolution. The gesture has been adopted by protesters, particularly for pro-democracy protest movements in Southeast Asia, mainly in Thailand and Myanmar, as well as in other countries, including Hong Kong.

As in Western cultures, giving someone your middle finger is offensive in Chinese culture, signifying disrespect.
