Trench foot, or immersion foot syndrome, is a condition that can occur when your feet are cold and wet for a long period of time. It often happens when you have to wear wet socks and shoes or boots for days at a time. Prolonged exposure to damp, cold and sometimes unsanitary conditions can lead to the disease.

Symptoms of trench foot include a tingling and/or itching sensation, pain, swelling, cold and blotchy skin, numbness, and a prickly or heavy feeling in the foot. The foot may be red, dry, and painful after it becomes warm. Blisters may form, followed by skin and tissue dying and falling off.

These patients will often come into the office complaining of excessive foot odors, skin discolorations, rashes, and concern over frequently having wet or moist socks.

The reason that nerve damage might result in strange feelings, like wetness, is that your brain could be trying unsuccessfully to interpret signals from your muscles. Instead of feeling whatever external stimuli are present, your brain might instead self-reference previous sensations it has felt, such as feeling wet.
