Valve's Left 4 Dead franchise is still fondly remembered by fans of its co-op zombie shooter formula, but that hasn't made a third game in the series any more likely. A developer known for its lack of third entries in all of its major IPs, Valve's treatment of Left 4 Dead has been no different.

Left 4 Dead 3 would include a vast open-world, with hundreds of zombies populating it, but this is where Valve ran into issues. Apparently, the new Source 2 engine just couldn't keep up with the game, and ultimately Valve decided to shelve the project until the engine was ready.

Back 4 Blood was developed by Turtle Rock Studios, including seven of the developers who worked on the demo that became Left 4 Dead. According to the development team, Back 4 Blood features a more expanded story than the Left 4 Dead games, and has a more uplifting tone than other zombie games.
